MOUNT PLEASANT Mich. - After a week off to rest, the Central Michigan men's cross country team will make its way just over the Indiana border to participate in Friday's Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational.
The Chippewa men's and women's teams will reverse roles this weekend as the men will get the chance to see how they stack up on the national scale, while the women are idle. The CMU women placed 26th last weekend at the 31st annual Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational.
The competition will feature a mix of teams primarily from the Midwest, along with a smattering of teams from the southern states such as Clemson, Murray State, UNC-Greensboro and Belmont, among others.
After seasonal sickness swept through the Chippewas' ranks and affected their performance two weeks ago at the Spartan Invitational, coach Matt Kaczor said the entire team is healthy and ready to compete, with the exception of Ben Yagiela who suffered an ankle injury in practice this week.
"I'm hoping that with another week of training we've been able to shore up a few gaps on the team," Kaczor said. "We're trying to see where we stack up so we can get those gaps closer so we're ready for conference."
Spencer Nousain has been CMU's top finisher in both events in which the Chippewas have cometed this season, and has helped form a solid leadership core with fellow veterans Casey Voisin and Joseph Emanuel.
"I don't want to say they're 'steady eddie's' like it's a bad thing, but they're guys that you know what to expect and you know what you're going to get out of them," Kaczor said.
Central Michigan will run in the Gold Division race, which will begin at 5 p.m.
