MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - As openers go in track and field, there was plenty to the good for the Central Michigan track and field teams.
The Chippewa women won eight events and the men captured six on Friday as CMU opened the indoor season with the Jack Skoog Triangular at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track & Field Complex.
"At home, running on pretty heavy legs, still in heavy training mode, so it was more about getting out and getting started," fourth-year CMU Director of Track & Field Mark Guthrie said. "Need to be patient, need to be consistent in what we do. We need to bond as a team and just continue to do good work."
Freshman Nadia Williams led the CMU women with victories in the long jump and in the 60-meter dash. The Chippewa women also got first-place finishes from Kylee Dobbelaere, weight throw; Calli Stemple, high jump; Ja'La Taylor, triple jump; Kelly Schubert, mile; Danielle Horton, 60-meter hurdles; and Kelsey Ross, 800-meter run.
CMU's Lexi Mielke and Erin Howard, competing unattached, won the 400-meter dash and shot put, respectively.
For the Chippewa men, Dylan Banagis won the weight throw, Melvin Harris captured the high jump; Sam Wagner won the pole vault; Jake Peister was first in the triple jump; Lorenzo Wells won the 200; and Scott Cousino was first in the 800.
"I was encouraged," Guthrie said. "I think in every event area we had something more than just positive, I think we saw some glimmers here and there. … In various spots we had moments.
"I know we have more talent here right now than we had four years ago when we got here. It's just getting a chance to put it all out there."
CMU won the women's meet with 68 points. Oakland was second with 50.5, and Alma finished third with 12.5. Oakland edged the Chippewas in the men's team standings, 68-67. Alma was third with 6.
"Each sport's different," Guthrie said. "Our win for us is doing well in the conference meet. Football, basketball, softball, volleyball -- it's about winning every time out, that's what they're trying to do. Our wins are getting out of meets healthy, making progress and being ready to go on the right day."
The Chippewas go to Saginaw Valley State for their next two competitions, the Doug Hansen Invitational on Friday, Jan. 20, and the Cardinal Invitational on Jan. 27. They are scheduled to participate in the Eastern Michigan Quad on Jan. 28.
"Every first meet has some wide eyes," Guthrie said. "You just try to work through that so they get those experiences so that when you have that moment, where they can do something, they're ready.
"We've recruited well and now it's just a matter of getting in the right setting in the right facility in the right situation."
