INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. â€" Jocelyne Lemay tied a single-game program record with six goals to lead the Central Michigan women's lacrosse team to a 14-9 win over Butler in a nonconference matchup at the Bulldogs' Varsity Field on Thursday.
The win, the Chippewas second straight, lifted them to 3-4 while Butler fell to 1-7. CMU will open Atlantic Sun play next week when it hosts Mercer (5-1) on Friday, March 24.
"(In the next week) we'll just be really reflecting back and seeing where we can make some solid adjustments and getting really familiar with our opponents," said CMU head coach Sara Tisdale. "Against Mercer is a big opening weekend for us and being able to walk away with two wins would be more than just a statement in our eyes."
Lemay's six goals was enough to make her the team leader in for the season with a total of 17 on the season. She surpassed teammate Shannon Doyle, who scored once against the Bulldogs.
"I thought Jocelyne played really well," said Tisdale. "She's smart and honestly it's one of those things where you tell me she has six goals and I don't even know it because of how she does it. She fits well into the offense; she's not a selfish player. All of her goals, if you were to look back, were probably assisted goals because of how well she moves."
Lemay scored the first for the Chippewas with less than a minute off the clock. Butler responded with four consecutive goals, but, following a timely Tisdale timeout, CMU responded with nine more before the end of the half, when they led 10-5.
Riley Huda had a record-breaking performance as well, tallying seven of the team's eight assists to go along with one goal. Natalie Karlen had three goals and Tyra Prince added two.
The Chippewas outshot Butler 33-23. Dominique Hamman had nine saves in goal for CMU.
"This week was really important for us to tighten everything up and make sure that we were running as a unit." Tisdale said. "I think we were able to accomplish that today both on the offensive and defensive side."
I like how we fast broke today and how we really pushed the ball. I liked how we were reading the defense. I thought that was really solid and we got a couple extra goals off of that. All in all, we're looking to be that hustle team that works to our possession."
