MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Two days after the first shutout of the season, it was another first shutout for the Central Michigan baseball team.
This one to the bad.
Michigan State struck for three runs in the first inning and three Spartan pitchers limited the Chippewas to seven hits on Tuesday as MSU handed CMU a 7-0 nonconference loss at Theunissen Stadium.
It marked the first time the Chippewas, who committed four errors in the game, have been shut out in 2017. CMU posted its first shutout on Sunday, 15-0, at Toledo.
It was the final nonconference game of the season for CMU (28-24), which opens a three-game Mid-American Conference series on Thursday (3:05 p.m.) at Theunissen against Ball State.
CMU is 15-6 in MAC play and leads the West Division by three games over the Cardinals, who are 12-9 in league play. The Chippewas, who wrapped up a West Division title share with that 15-0 Sunday win at Toledo, need to win just one of the three games against Ball State to clinch the division crown outright.
CMU heads into the weekend two games behind East-leading Kent State for the overall lead in the MAC. The Golden Flashes play a three-game set at Ohio this weekend.
Freshman Mike Mokma (1-0) started and went 5 1/3 innings for the win against the Chippewas on Tuesday. Nathan Witt and Ethan Landon each pitched in relief. It was the Spartan's second shutout of the season.
Jordan Grosjean (1-4) started and took the loss. He allowed three runs on six hits, walked two and struck out two over 3 2/3 innings.
Braxton Markle, Michael Brettell, Cameron Brown, Brady Williams and Zach Kohn each pitched in relief for CMU.
Daniel Robinson and Blake Cleveland had two hits apiece for the Chippewas.
