FARMVILLE, Va. - The Central Michigan field hockey team dropped its Mid-American Conference opener, 4-0, to Longwood on Saturday at the Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field.
The Chippewas slipped to 0-8 and are scheduled for a nonconference matchup at VCU on Sunday (1 p.m.) at the Cary Street Field.
"Longwood is very good," CMU coach Molly Pelowski said. "We knew that they would be threatening from an attacking standpoint, but we really neutralized their threat up front. The quality of our play was inconsistent, but there was also some major growth."
Leonie Verstraete and Edel Nyland both scored to stake Longwood (7-1) to a 2-0 lead just six minutes into the game. CMU was unable to respond and the Lancers added two insurance goals in the second half.
Lily Amadio started in goal for Central Michigan, recording six saves in 58 minutes. Abigal Ebersole replaced Amadio to finish the match, saving two.
Carly Brengosz had two shots on goal for the Chippewas while Alex Gonda and Cara Satre each added one.
Goalkeeper Katie Wyman had three saves for Longwood.
"We know what we need to do, we're not guessing at this point," said Pelowski. "That's part of the battle moving forward. It's not being reflected on the scoreboard yet, but we are improving every match."
The Chippewas' Sunday opponent, VCU, defeated Lock Haven, 2-1, on Friday for its fifth consecutive win. The Rams are 7-1 on the season.
