CMU opens with trips to Alabama, Florida, Texas
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Jordan Bischel era of Central Michigan baseball officially begins on Feb. 15, 2019 when the Chippewas play Troy in Troy, Ala. to begin a season-opening four-game series.
Bischel was named the Chippewas' coach in June after a highly successful run at Northwood, where he took the Timberwolves from Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference also-rans to champions in just four seasons.
The four-game set at Troy kicks off a 56-game regular-season schedule that includes a trip to Beaumont, Texas in February for the Lamar Cardinal Classic, a 10-day Spring Break trip to Florida, and a nonconference four-game series in Normal, Ill. against Illinois State. Among CMU's probably opponents in Florida are Butler, Pitt, Bucknell and Villanova.
The Chippewas are slated to play four games – two with host Lamar and two with Prairie View A&M -- in the Cardinal Classic. It is the first time in program history that CMU will play either of those two schools.
"Being a northern team, we will always be challenged early in the season with a heavy road schedule," Bischel said. "With that said, it will also give us a great chance to learn a tremendous amount about ourselves prior to a very competitive MAC schedule."
CMU is also slated to play in-state non-conference rivals Michigan State, Grand Valley State, Oakland, Cornerstone, Concordia and Davenport.
The Chippewas' Mid-American Conference-opening weekend is March 22-24 at Ohio, and the home opener is slated for March 26 against Grand Valley.
CMU is slated to play home MAC series with Northern Illinois, Ball State, Western Michigan and Miami (Ohio). The Chippewas will go on the road for MAC series at Kent State, Toledo, Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan in addition to Ohio.
