Chippewa stay close to home with incoming class
Nov. 15, 2018
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan women's basketball coach Sue Guevara has announced the signing of three players who will join the program for the 2019-20 season.
The newest class of Chippewas features Molly Davis, a Midland native; Shine Strickland-Gills from Saginaw; and Kate McArthur, who hails from Warren.
"Overall I think this class brings a lot of energy to our program," Guevara said. "They've all got a great work ethic and are real tough-minded kids. I think they are all going fill needs for us at their positions down the road."
After bringing in all out-of-state recruits in last year's recruiting class, this year's group all come from within a 200-mile radius of Mount Pleasant.
"I've always said that you want to try to keep the best players in your own backyard," Guevara said. "This year, with what we needed on our team, we were able to do that.
"It's always great for attendance too. We have kids coming in from Midland and Saginaw and another from about two hours away (suburban Detroit). I think they'll bring a lot of fans with them."
Davis, a 5-foot-7 guard who Guevara projects at the point, prepped at Dow High School where she has totaled 832 career points entering her senior year. She helped lead the Chargers to a Class A district title in 2016-17.
"Molly is a point guard that brings a high-tempo style of play and is a real mentally tough kid," Guevara said. "She can shoot the ball, comes from a very good high school and AAU program and has played against some of the best in country. I think our fans are really going to love watching her play."
Strickland-Gills, a 6-foot forward, comes from Saginaw Heritage High School where she helped lead the Hawks to the Class A state championship during her junior season.
"Shine will play in the post for us. Both her and (McArthur) have won a state championship in high school so they know how to win," Guevara said. "Shine is a leaper and can help us set up the floor. She also has a real quick jumper and can play with her back to the basket."
McArthur, a 5-8 guard, has scored 1,000-plus career points at Cousino High School and was a part of a Patriots team that won the Class A state championship in 2015-16.
"She reminds me of a smaller Taylor Johnson," said Guevara of McArthur in comparing her to Johnson, who twice was named the Mid-American Conference Sixth Person of the Year while playing at CMU from 2011-14. "She's strong and a great 3-point shooter who can run the floor."
