Versatility a hallmark of Jonker's 2019 class
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan softball coach Margo Jonker announced today the signing of seven student-athletes who will join the Chippewas for the 2020 season.
Set to enroll at CMU in August, 2019 are Samantha DiCicco of Macomb, Skylar Coberley of Bay City, Kelsey Alexander of Saline, Madison Jordan of Lowell, Emily Bracamonte of Hacienda Heights, Calif., Gisele Acuña of La Mirada, Calif., and Caitlyn Britton of Lake Villa, Illinois.
"We are excited about our 2019 recruiting class," Jonker said. "It is another outstanding group of softball players who will help us continue on our quest for excellence on the field and off the field.
"This class is extremely versatile. Most have quality experience playing multiple positions, and they will bring a combination of power and speed to our program."
Bracamonte, the sister of CMU assistant coach Jessica Bracamonte, attends Glen A. Wilson High School and is a right-handed hitting third baseman who has the versatility to play any number of positions.
"Emily has great experience playing top-notch travel ball," Jonker said. "Emily has high game intelligence, which is a tremendous value coming in. She is a gap-to-gap hitter, and she comes from a softball family."
Acuña, who attends Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, Calif., has been a teammate of Emily Bracamonte on the Orange County Batbusters and, like Bracamonte, possesses a high softball IQ, Jonker said.
"Acuña is a mature softball player with excellent travel-ball experience," Jonker said. "She's a solid infielder with great fundamentals, and she's versatile and can hit for power."
Britton, who attends Warren Township High School, is a pitcher/outfielder who wields a big bat. As a sophomore in 2017, she drove in 81 runs, the second-highest total in Illinois high school softball history, and she enters her senior season with 33 career homers.
"Caitlyn is a great athlete who has excellent foot speed and can hit for power," Jonker said. "She is outstanding in the outfield and also effective in the infield."
Coberley, a senior at Bay City Central High School, is an infielder and also an accomplished volleyball player. She tops her school's career home run list with 19 and has driven in more than 120 runs in her first three years of high school ball.
"Skylar has played shortstop in high school and other infield positions in travel ball," Jonker said. "She is very competitive and is just going to get better each year of her collegiate career."
DiCicco, an infielder, is a senior at Macomb Dakota High School where she has helped lead the Cougars to a Division I state championship (2017) and a state runner-up (2016). She has a career .490 batting average.
"She is an excellent defensive player with a good arm and smooth glove," Jonker said. "We were impressed with her at our clinic and continued to be as we watched her in game competition."
Jordan is a standout middle infielder/outfielder at Lowell High School. She holds the high school state record for triples in a game with four, and her resumé includes an 11-RBI game, which ranks second in state history.
"She is a good defensive player who is better known for her offense," said Jonker, adding that Jordan most likely will be a position player and a backup in the circle. "She can hit for average and for power."
Alexander, a senior at Saline High School, plays primarily in the outfield but can also catch, making her a valuable asset. She is also a three-year letter winner in basketball.
"Kelsey has excellent foot speed, and is an intelligent aggressive baserunner, a quality we are looking for in this class," Jonker said.
