Addition of Winske completes Chippewa staff
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Tom Winske has joined coach Jordan Bischel's Central Michigan baseball staff as a volunteer assistant and will be responsible for working with the Chippewa catchers and for coaching third base during games.
Â
Winske comes to CMU after a highly successful two-decade run as the head coach at NCAA Division III St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis. He amassed a 444-287-1 career mark from 1999-2018 in charge of the Green Knights program and is the Midwest Conference's all-time leader in both conference victories and overall wins.
Â
Bischel, a pitcher, played for Winske at St. Norbert from 2000-03 and served as an assistant under his mentor from 2007-09. CMU assistant Tony Jandron played at St. Norbert for Winske from 2007-10.
Â
The addition of Winske completes Bischel staff, which also includes assistant Kyle Schroder.
Â
"Adding a coach with Tom's track record is a huge boost for our university," said Bischel, who was named the Chippewas' head coach June. "For the past 20 years, Tom has run one of the most successful Division III programs in the Midwest.
Â
"His experience level and continued passion for working with student-athletes is incredible, and his influence on me as both a player and as a young coach still has a tremendous impact on my approach to coaching today. I could not be more excited about what Tom and our assistant coaching staff as a whole will bring to Central Michigan University baseball."
Â
Winske, who will also oversee bunting and baserunning, was named the Midwest Conference North Division Coach of the Year nine times in his 20 years at St. Norbert and led the Green Knights to four conference championships and five NCAA Tournament berths.
Â
His 2017 team won 30 games, the most victories in a season by any men's athletics team in St. Norbert history.
Â
The Chippewas are scheduled to open their first season under Bischel and his staff on Feb. 15, 2019 when they open a four-game series against Troy in Troy, Ala.
