
Chippewas Take 2 To Open Liberty Challenge

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Central Michigan softball team pouned out 21 hits -- six of them from Lacy Tolfree -- in collecting two wins on Thursday at the Liberty Softball Challenge at Liberty's Osborne Stadium.
The Chippewas (3-3) blanked Delaware State, 9-0, in five innings to start the day and finished with a 8-5 win over Liberty in the nightcap.
CMU will close the challenge on Friday with a rematch against Delaware State (1 p.m.) and Liberty (6 p.m.). Delaware State is 0-2, Liberty 6-1.
GAME 1
Senior Hanna Warren (1-2) fired a one-hitter - a one-out third-inning single - in going the distance for CMU in the victory over Delaware State. She struck out four and walked two. The game was called after five innings because of the run rule.
The Chippewa hitters backed Warren with 10 hits, three of which came from Tolfree. Maison Kalina and Allison Curtis added two hits apiece, and Kalina drove in three runs.
A Tolfree two-run triple highlighted a four-run CMU second inning, and the Chippewas tacked on five runs in the fourth. Kalina had a two-run double during the inning.
GAME 2
Erika Underwood hit a two-run homer and Tolfree had three hits to lead CMU's 11-hit attack against Liberty.
Freshman Cloe Mallory (1-0) pitched 6 1/3 innings for the victory, her first as a collegian. She allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out one. She did not walk a batter.
The Chippewas led 8-1 going into the bottom of the seventh when Liberty scored four runs to make things interesting. Warren got a called third strike to end the game with two runners on for her first save of the season.
Kalina had a two-run double and finished with three RBI, while Curtis singled and doubled.
