EDINBURG, Texas - The big inning proved to be Central Michigan's undoing on Saturday as the Chippewa baseball team fell, 6-3, to host Texas-Rio Grande Valley at the Vaqueros' Al Ogletree Classic at Edinburg Stadium.
CMU (1-2), which split its two games on Friday to open the classic, is scheduled to play Stephen F. Austin on Sunday (noon) in its final game of its season-opening weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Ryan Fish hit a three-run homer to highlight a five-run seventh inning for UTGRV. The big inning upped the Chppewas' deficit to 6-0.
CMU came back with three runs in the eighth inning. Jason Sullivan hit a two-run homer and Zach Heeke drove in a run with an infield single. Heeke finished with two of CMU's seven hits.
LEATHERMAN SOLID
CMU starter Pat Leatherman took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out nine over six innings.
GOOD STARTS
CMU's three starters in the series - Michael Brettell, Tyler Hankins and Leatherman - pitched a combined 18 innings without walking a batter.
SOLID DEFENSE
The Chippewas did not commit an error in the game. They have committed just one error in their three games at UTRGV.
SUNDAY
Sophomore right-hander Zach Kohn will start for CMU against the Lumberjacks (0-2). Kohn made 17 appearances, three of them starts, in 2017. He went 1-4 with a 5.80 earned run average. CMU defeated Stephen F. Austin, 5-3, in its season opener on Friday.
Freshman left-hander Dru Dziedzic will make his first collegiate start for the Lumberjacks.
