
Chippewas Drop Series Opener In New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico scored nine runs in the first inning on Thursday and went on to hand Central Michigan a 20-9 loss in the opener of a four-game nonconference baseball series at the Lobos' Santa Ana Star Field.
Both teams are 2-3. Game two of the series is Friday at 8 p.m. Sophomore left-hander Tyler Hankins is scheduled to start for CMU against right-hander Justin Slaten.
HOW IT HAPPENED
New Mexico added three more runs in the second inning for a 12-1 lead. CMU struck back with seven runs in the fourth to cut its deficit to 12-8. But New Mexico scored two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to pull away. The Lobos scored at least one run in six of their eight turns at the plate.
ON THE MOUND
CMU starter Michael Brettell (1-1) allowed 12 runs on 12 hits and walked four over two innings in taking the loss. Jack Collins, Braxton Markle, Cam Brown, Tyler Brown and Bryan Jackiemiec worked in relief for the Chippewas.
New Mexico touched up CMU pitching for 19 hits, six of them for extra bases. The Chippewa pitchers also walked 12.
Drew Gillespie (1-0), the third New Mexico pitcher, earned the win. He allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts and two walks over the final 4 2/3 innings.
THE HITTERS
CMU collected 10 hits. Junior Evan Kratt had three, including a double, and drove in two runs. Jacob Crum added two hits and Daniel Robinson, who doubled, picked up two RBI.
Hayden Schilling had four hits for New Mexico.
