CLEARWATER, Fla. - Cloe Mallory and Laura Vaccaro combined on a five-hitter Tuesday as the Central Michigan softball team downed Binghamton, 3-0, in the Chippewas' opener at the Citrus 2 Tournament.
It was CMU's second straight win as it improved to 7-7. The Chippewas are scheduled to play their second and final game in the tournament on Wednesday (11 a.m.) against South Dakota State (8-5). Binghamton is 3-6.
IN THE CIRCLE
Mallory (2-2), a freshman, started and earned the win. She allowed four hits, walked two and struck out two over 3 1/3 innings. Vaccaro went the final 3 2/3 frames, surrendering just one hit while walking two and striking out one for her first save.
Vaccaro came on in the fourth after Mallory had surrendered a one-out double. A walk and a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position, but Vaccaro got a groundout and a fly out to end the threat. She also pitched out of a two-on jam in the bottom of the seventh.
AT THE PLATE
The Chippewas seized a 1-0 lead in the second. Allison Curtis singled, was sacrificed to second, and scored on an Aliena Magiera double. It was the first career hit and first career RBI for Magiera, a freshman.
CMU added two insurance runs in the seventh. Rachel Vieira and Kaila Fulker each singled, and Vieira and pinch runner Courtney Streich both scored on an error.
The Chippewas collected five hits, all singles.
