Seven-Run Outburst Gives CMU Series Win At Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. - Central Michigan did all its scoring in the eighth inning on Sunday in taking a 7-4 win over Ball State in the third and final game of a Mid-American Conference series, giving CMU the series win at the Cardinals' First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
The Chippewas, who scored 23 runs on Saturday in taking game two of the series, improved to 9-18-1 and 4-2 MAC. Ball State is 14-13, 3-3.
CMU is scheduled to play host to Cleary in a nonconference game on Wednesday (3:05 p.m.) at Theunissen Stadium. The Cougars are 9-14.
ON THE MOUND
Jack Collins picked up the win in relief of CMU starter Tyler Hankins. Collins (2-1) struck out eight of the 11 batters he faced over three innings. He did not allow a hit and walked two.
Hankins surrendered four runs, three of them earned, on eight hits, struck out two, and walked two over six innings.
Evan Marquardt (1-1), who relieved starter Drey Jameson in the seventh, took the loss. He allowed five runs on two hits, struck out two, and walked two.
AT THE PLATE
Jacob Crum and Jason Sullivan had two hits to lead CMU, while Daniel Robinson, Griffin Lockwood-Powell, Zavier Warren and Zach Heeke each had one.
Crum and Warren each drove in two runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 4-0, the Chippewas sent 12 men to the plate and scored seven runs on four hits and two Ball State errors in the eighth.
Warren struck the big blow, a two-run double that put CMU on the board. Sullivan followed with an RBI single, Zach Heeke then doubled in a run to tie it 4-4. Sullivan then scored on a Zach Gilles bunt to put CMU in front, 5-4, and then Crum delivered a two-run single to make it 7-4.
NEXT
After Wednesday's game against Cleary, the Chippewas play host to Kent State in a three-game MAC series beginning on Friday, April 6. The Golden Flashes are 15-9, 4-2. They took two of three from Western Michigan this weekend.
