NORFOLK, Va. - Shannon Doyle tied a program record with six goals on Friday as the Central Michigan lacrosse team downed Old Dominion, 19-15, in a nonconference game at the Monarchs' L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
The win was CMU's fifth consecutive, the longest streak in program history, and it lifted the Chippewas to 10-5. CMU plays at Coastal Carolina on Sunday (11 a.m.) in a nonleague game.
THE LEADERS
Tyra Prince added four goals for CMU, while Anna Schoonover had three, and Jocelyne Lemay and Jessica Schuchardt added two each. Natalie Karlen finished with three assists.
Glory Johnson and Brooke Stein scored four goals apiece for Old Dominion (5-10).
IN GOAL
Dominique Hamman made eight saves in going the distance for the Chippewas. Old Dominion starter Lauren Ey surrendered 16 goals over 49-plus minutes in taking the loss.
STATS
Old Dominion outshot the Chippewas, 32-29, and finished with 11 ground balls to CMU's three. The draw controls and turnovers were even, 18-18 and 13-13, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Prince scored unassisted at the 3:22 mark of the second half to break a 10-10 tie and ignite a 5-0 Chippewa run after which Old Dominion never got closer than three goals. Prince scored three of her goals during the spurt.
Prince's run-starting tally gave CMU its first lead of the game. The Chippewas outscored the Monarchs, 10-6, in the second half.
MILESTONE
Doyle's six goals marked a season high for a Chippewa, and she became the third player in program history to score as many in a single game. Lemay has accomplished the feat three times, and Schoonover has done it once.
SCOUTING
Coastal Carolina defeated Detroit Mercy, 14-6, on Thursday for its third consecutive victory, upping its record to 8-7.
