MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Maison Kalina's two-run home run highlighted a three-run fifth inning as the Central Michigan softball team topped Mid-American Conference West-leading Toledo, 6-2, in the opener of a three-game series on Friday at Margo Jonker Stadium.
The Chippewas improved to 20-21, 10-8 MAC and will conclude their final home series of the season with a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) against the Rockets, who are 30-16, 14-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-1, CMU took the lead on Rachel Vieira two-run double in the third inning. Vieira singled in a run during the fifth.
IN THE CIRCLE
Winning pitcher Hanna Warren (7-7) allowed two runs on eight hits over five innings. Taylor Weaver went the final two innings, setting down the Rockets in order in both frames.
Losing pitcher Heather Webb (13-9) allowed six runs and six hits.
AT THE PLATE
Kalina and Vieira shared the team lead for CMU in hits with two apiece. Shaidan Knapp added a triple for the Chippewas, while Lacy Tolfree and Andrea Perlberg each singled.
Kalina's home run was her second of the season.
CMU COACH Margo Jonker:
"That was Chippewa softball. It's much more like how I know we can play and have played during the season. We just have to keep going with it because that's how good we are. Toledo is a very good team. Our pitchers did a good job keeping them off."
"Today was a great day. I thought we played well. We had one miscue on defense, but other than that I thought we played well defensively and offensively."
"Toledo is known as a very good team. I believe everyone in the conference is ... It's just a matter of who comes that day. Anybody can beat anybody. I think when you get to the (league) tournament, whoever gets there ... anybody can win that thing."
