MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan's Mitch Stanitzek has been named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.
Â
The trophy is recognized as college football's premier award for community service and named for 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, a quarterback from Florida. The award goes to the Football Bowl Subdivision player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Â
Stanitzek, a senior defensive end from Grand Rapids, has appeared in 35 games during his Chippewa career, recording 59 total tackles, 37 of them solo stops. He has six sacks among 11 tackles-for-loss with two fumble recoveries and an interception.
Â
Stanitzek in May earned his bachelor's degree with a double major in marketing and logistics management. He finished his undergrad work with a 3.74 grade point average and is beginning work on his master's in business administration this fall.
Â
His list of off-field community service includes volunteering with Mount Pleasant schools, as a business administration student ambassador, Special Olympics, the Humane Animal Treatment Society, and at West Catholic High School, his alma mater.
Â
Stanitzek has also been involved in team volunteer projects including kids clinics and food banks as well as cleanup and refurbishment of Eagle Village, a youth facility in Hersey.
Â
Stanitzek is one of 106 student-athletes representing FBS universities on the watch list. The winner will be announced on Dec. 4 by the National Football Foundation.
