MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – On the final day of the Chippewa Invitational, the Central Michigan volleyball team fell to Valparaiso 23-25, 25-8, 25-11, 25-16 on Saturday at McGuirk Arena.
The trio of Kalina Smith, Lyza Myers and Savannah Thompson led the Chippewas (2-4) with nine kills. Megan Kern had 15 digs while Kendall Braate had 21 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CMU came ready to play, jumping out to a 9-3 lead in the first set. Valpo would rally to make it 23-22, but Myers had three straight kills to finish off the set and put the Chippewas up, 1-0.
After losing its first set of the invitational to CMU, Valpo won three straight sets to win the match and invitational.Â
"Overall, they outperformed us in sets two, three and four," CMU coach Mike Gawlik said. "I thought the way that they did it and the maturity that they did it with is something we need to learn from.
"I didn't think tonight was all bad, but they really kept the pressure on us for (sets) Â two, three and four and they constantly got runs and early leads which is hard to come back from."
MYERS MOMENTUM
For the second consecutive game, Myers shared the lead for the Chippewas in kills. The Napoleon native posted eight kills versus DePaul on Friday and nine on Saturday against Valpo. Myers also had 10 kills in CMU's victory over La Salle on Friday.
SUPER FROSH
It was an impressive weekend for the freshman from Thornton, Ill. Thompson was tied for the Chippewas lead in kills with 27 in three games and finished second in digs with 29.
BOUNCING BACK
"Volleyball is a game of failures, somebody on either side feels like they screwed up every single time the ball hits the ground and that's just the nature of our game," Gawlik said. "The team that deals with that better and moves on to the next rally is far more likely to win."Â
NEXT
Central Michigan goes to Terre Haute, Ind. Next weekend for the Indiana State Sycamore Invitational. The Chippewas will face Green Bay (10 a.m.) and Saint Louis (2 p.m.) on Friday before taking on tournament host Indiana State (noon) on Saturday.
