MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan soccer team will close out nonconference play this weekend as it plays host to Illinois-Chicago on Sunday (1 p.m.) at the CMU Soccer Stadium.
It is also Senior Day for the Chippewas.
CMU (2-5) is coming off a 5-0 win over Oakland last Sunday. It was arguably the Chippewas' best performance of the season as six different players found themselves in the point column, led by two goals and two assists from Lexi Pelafas.
"We're really pushing the things that we need to work on and to grow in the things we do well," coach Peter McGahey said. "The most important thing is to put in a good week of training and try to win the day."
THE SENIORS
Four senior members of the CMU soccer team will be honored on Sunday.
• Mary Carlson, a two-time Academic All-MAC honoree, is a defender from Grand Rapids. Carlson has eight career points, including two this season.
"Mary has brought two real intangibles," McGahey said. "There's an intensity of how Mary trains and she has a real compassionate heart in terms of her leadership style."
• Madison Costner, also a two-time Academic All-MAC honoree, is a forward form Dublin, Ohio.
Costner has 30 points in her career, seven this season. She finished second among CMU players in goals the past two seasons.
"She uses determination and spirit to be resilient," McGahey said. "Her competitive spirit is fantastic and is coupled with this real quiet, supportive, to the point contribution to our culture."
• Shannon Magnan, another two-time Academic All-MAC honoree, is a forward/mid from Brighton.
Magnan has 15 points in her career, including nine this season. She was one of only two players to start all 19 games last season.
"Her competitiveness on the field, her willingness to do what it takes is really good," McGahey said. "I think her driving the culture in a way to create a family has been really positive."
• Lexi Pelafas, a two-time All-MAC First Team selection, is a forward from Wheaton, Ill.
Pelafas is Central Michigan's all-time leader in points (85) and goals (39). She led the MAC in scoring in 2017 with 13 goals.
"Her unique strength in personality is everybody sees the competitiveness," McGahey said. "But there's a real determination to grow her game, improve herself and be the very best teammate she can be."
THE OPPONENT
The Flames are 1-8 after a 2-0 Horizon League win over Detroit Mercy on Thursday. CMU is the fourth MAC team that UIC will face this season, after Toledo, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan.
Six different players lead the Flames with one goal in 2018. UIC has been outscored 31-8 and outshot 159-99.
