CMU opens MAC competition with a dual at Western Michigan next weekend
DENVER – The Central Michigan gymnastics team scored a season-low 193.250 on Saturday in placing second behind Denver in a nonconference quad at the Pioneers' Hamilton Gymnasium.
Denver, which is ranked eighth, won the meet with a 196.175 team score. Sacramento State and Texas Woman's tied for third with 190.150.
The Chippewas are 6-1 on the season. In finishing behind Denver, it was CMU's first loss of the season.
"I think there were several contributing factors," CMU coach Jerry Reighard said. "One thing we knew was going to happen was that the altitude affected us a lot more than we expected. We had really nice routines (on bars) until we got to the end and then we started making mistakes that made it seem like we're out of shape, and I know we're not."
The Chippewas' best-scoring event of the meet came in the first rotation when they posted a 48.475 on bars. CMU scored 48.150 on the floor exercise – they came in averaging 49.113, which was the ninth best nationally – in the event. The Chippewas scored 48.400 on vault and 48.225 on balance beam.
LEADERS
Sophomore Nora Fettinger posted a season-best 9.875 to lead the Chippewas on the floor exercise; Skyler Memmel led CMU with a 9.775 on beam; and Denelle Pedrick led the Chippewas on both bars (9.750) and on vault (9.725). Sydney Williams also scored a 9.725 on vault.
Pedrick was fifth in the all-around with a 38.375 total.
Pedrick and Williams tied for fifth on vault, Pedrick was eighth on bars, Memmel was fourth on beam, and Fettinger was fourth on floor.
MOVING FORWARD
The Chippewas entered the meet tied for 22nd nationally with rival Western Michigan. CMU opens Mid-American Conference competition with a dual at Western Michigan on Sunday, Jan. 27.
The Broncos (1-2) finished third in a tri-meet with Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan on Friday. They scored 192.000 in the event.
CMU is the defending MAC regular-season champion and last year pulled off the double, placing first at the MAC Championships.
"We can't allow (this kind of performance) to happen next weekend," Reighard said. "We have to be on top of our game and we have to be consistent in all four events. I think our team can rally from this and have an attitude that this won't happen. Knowing my teams (historically), we will get better from this. I know our coaches have some ideas that will make a difference."
