Stencel's pin, Hildebrandt's OT victory highlight CMU effort
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Good start, good finish.
In between, not enough for the Central Michigan wrestling team to pull off the upset.
Fifth-ranked Missouri won seven matches, recording a pin or a technical fall in five of them, in handing the Chippewas a 32-15 Mid-American Conference dual-meet loss at the Tigers' Hearnes Center.
The highlights for CMU came in the opening bout and the last. Chippewa sophomore Drew Hildebrandt posted a 4-2 overtime victory in the 125-pound match, the first of the dual, and then sophomore Matt Stencel closed the meet with a pin at 285.
Stencel's pin, which came with just 22 seconds remaining in the bout, was big because it came over freshman Zach Elam, who is ranked No. 1 in the weight class in the January MAC rankings. Stencel is ranked second.
Nationally, Stencel is ranked 14th this week by The Open Mat. Elam is ranked 16th. The win lifted Stencel to 17-4 on the season with 13 pins.
Hildebrandt scored a 4-2 sudden-victory win over Dack Punke. The win snapped a three-match losing streak for Hildebrandt.
CMU also earned six team points at 184, where Missouri forfeited to Jordan Atienza.
The Chippewas, who are 2-4 overall, 1-2 MAC, are schedule to wrestle a MAC dual on Sunday (3 p.m.) at league newcomer Southern Illinois Edwardsville. The Cougars are 1-8 overall, 1-3 MAC in their first year in the league.
