Ambitious slate includes heavyweights Michigan, Georgia
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan softball team will open the McCall Salmon era with back-to-back matchups against Connecticut and Stetson in Clermont, Fla. on Feb. 14-15.
Salmon, named in June to succeed the legendary Margo Jonker as the Chippewas' coach, unveiled CMU's 47-game regular-season schedule on Friday.
CMU will play five games in three days in Clermont from Feb. 14-16, closing the season-opening weekend with a game against Purdue, one of five Big Ten opponents on the Chippewas' 2020 slate. Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Michigan State are also on the docket.
CMU is also scheduled to play nonconference games in Georgia and in Florida throughout February and March. Among their opponents is Georgia, which CMU will face twice on consecutive days (Feb. 21-22) in Athens.
The Bulldogs, last season, finished second in the Southeastern Conference and reached the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Michigan is the defending Big Ten champion and is one of four teams the Chippewas are scheduled to face in 2020 that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last spring. Georgia, defending Colonial Athletic Association champion James Madison, and defending Mid-American Conference Tournament champion Toledo are the others.
In addition, three of CMU's 2020 opponents – South Dakota State, Purdue and Kent State – reached the National Softball Invitational Championship a year ago.
"We have a lot of great nonconference opponents on our 2020 schedule to help prepare us for MAC play," Salmon said.
The Chippewas will play five games in Athens, Ga. from Feb. 21-23 – James Madison and Austin Peay are their other opponents there – and will head to Madeira Beach, Fla. for spring break from March 6-13.
In all, the Chippewas are scheduled to play 21 games in Florida and Georgia before opening MAC play with a doubleheader at Akron on March 21.
The Chippewas' home opener, a nonconference twinbill with Detroit Mercy, is slated for March 28. They are slated to play four consecutive home dates, all doubleheaders, from April 5-11. Three of those dates are with MAC foes Kent State, Ball State and Northern Illinois; Oakland, a nonconference opponent, is also slated to visit during that seven-day stretch.
CMU plays at Michigan on April 14 and at Michigan State on April 22. With a twinbill scheduled with in-state MAC rival Western Michigan (at home on May 1) and dates with Detroit Mercy, Oakland, Michigan and Michigan State, the Chippewas are slated to play every Division I school in the state of Michigan.
The MAC Tournament is scheduled for May 6-9 in Akron, Ohio.
