MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan women's basketball team was picked to finish first in the West Division in a poll of Mid-American Conference coaches, released today.
The Chippewas, the three-time defending MAC regular-season champions, were selected by four of the 12 league coaches to finish first in the West and received 60 total points.
"it's nice to have the respect of the other coaches, but we have a lot of work to do this preseason to get ready for the MAC," first-year CMU coach Heather Oesterle said.
CMU junior guard Micaela Kelly was named to the Preseason All-MAC West Division Team. Kelly was CMU's third-leading scorer a year ago when she earned Third Team All-MAC accolades.
The Chippewas open the season at home on Wednesday, Nov. 6 (7 p.m.) against Green Bay at McGuirk Arena.
CMU returns three starters from a 25-8 team that reached the NCAA Tournament for the second-consecutive year.
Ohio was picked to finish first in the East and was selected to be the overall league regular-season champion as well as the tournament champion. The Bobcats received all 12 first-place votes to win the East and the overall title, and garnered 10 votes as the tournament champion.
Defending tourney champion Buffalo and Northern Illinois received one vote each as the tournament champ.
Also named to the Preseason All-MAC West Team: Courtney Woods, senior guard/forward, Northern Illinois; Oshlynn Brown, junior forward, Ball State; Corrione Cardwell, junior guard, Eastern Michigan; Breanna Mobley, senior forward, Western Michigan; Nakiah Black, junior guard, Toledo.
The Preseason All-MAC East Team: Erica Johnson, sophomore forward, Ohio; Summer Hemphill, senior forward, Buffalo; Lauren Dickerson, senior guard, Miami (Ohio); Megan Carter, junior guard, Kent State; CeCe Hooks, junior guard, Ohio.
