Pair helped CMU roll past NIU, 48-10.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A pair of Central Michigan football standouts earned individual accolades on Monday from the Mid-American Conference for their respective performances in the Chippewas' 48-10 victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
Chippewa running back Jonathan Ward was named the MAC West Offensive Player of the Week, while linebacker Michael Oliver earned the West Defensive Player of the Week Award.
Ward, a senior from Kankakee, Ill., rolled up 149 all-purpose yards and scored a touchdown to help spark a Chippewa offense that finished with a season-high 615 yards. Ward rushed for 138 yards on 20 carries, averaging 6.9 yards per carry, and caught three passes for 11 yards. It marked the fifth time in his last six games that Ward has surpassed 100 yards in rushing.
Oliver, a senior from Detroit, led a staunch Chippewa defense with a team-high five tackles and made his first career interception, returning it 22 yards in the third quarter, as the CMU defense pitched a second-half shutout. The CMU defense held NIU to 22 rushing yards, including minus-23 in the first half, and forced four turnovers.
