Chippewas take on Appalachian State on Wednesday
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan field hockey team will travel to Oxford, Ohio to square off against Appalachian State on Wednesday (noon) in the first game of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
The Chippewas (2-16) are seeded seventh in the tournament, while the Mountaineers (9-8) are the sixth seed. The winner advances to play Ohio in a quarterfinal game on Thursday. The tournament concludes with the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Familiar Foes
The Chippewas lost to the Mountaineers in Mount Pleasant, 5-2, on Oct. 4 despite a narrow margin in shots and two goals from freshman Alice O'Hagan.
Appalachian State's five goals against CMU's defense, which has kept the Chippewas competitive in multiple games this year, is tied for the second-highest total scored against it by a MAC opponent this season.
CMU coach Catherine Ostoich says solid defensive play will be vital on Wednesday.
"We're going to play a little bit better, diligent defense," said Ostoich. "They're obviously a team that knows how to score off corners, so we really have to limit the number of corners."
On an equally important note, Ostoich said her offense must do its part for the Chippewas to advance.
"We talked a little bit more on different ways of how we're going to attack them, how we're going to press them with the focus of pressuring and valuing the ball more than we did the first time we played them," she said.
Who Wants It More?
Despite their underdog status, the Chippewas have a chance to redeem their winless conference record with a win against the Mountaineers. Ostoich said her team possesses an important element: determination.
"Statistically, it doesn't matter if you're the better team on paper," she said. "These are the best games to be a part of … you've got to want it from start to finish for the entire 60 minutes and you've got to show that you want it.
"Usually, the team that wants it more is the team that comes away victorious."
