CMU enters strong field at Appalachian State Mountaineer Invitational
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Another good early season test for the Central Michigan wrestling team.
The Chippewas will compete on Saturday in the Appalachian State Mountaineer Invitational. The event begins at 9 a.m. and will take place in App State's Varsity Gym.
"There will be some good competition in every weight class," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "It's an opportunity for our young guys to make a name for themselves or maybe upset some people and maybe break into the rankings."
The field includes the Chippewas and the host Mountaineers along with Oregon State, West Virginia, Duke, Air Force, Kent State and Gardner-Webb. The event comprises both invitational and open tournaments.
Fifteen Chippewas will compete in the invitational tournament; two will compete in the open. Individuals from Virginia, Campbell, Chattanooga and Presbyterian are also scheduled to compete.
"We're going to see people that I don't know that we'd see anywhere else (throughout the season)," Borrelli said. "The only the team that's there that we probably see during the regular season is Kent State. It'll be good for our guys to wrestle some other people."
Three teams in the field are ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Mid-Major poll. The Mountaineers are 13th, Air Force is 18th, and CMU is 20th.
The Chippewas are seeded in seven weight classes. Drew Hildebrandt (125 pounds) and Matt Stencel (heavyweight) are both first; Logan Parks (157) and Dresden Simon (141) are both second. CMU's Ben Cushman (184), Landon Pelham (197) and Corbyn Munson (149) are also seeded in their respective weight classes.
