Chippewas announce class of 2020
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan football coach Jim McElwain announced today that the Chippewas have signed 20 student-athletes comprising the Class of 2020.
The new Chippewas hail from nine states, including Hawaii. Four of the newcomers are from Florida and three each are from Michigan and Indiana. Members of the class also come from New Jersey, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Colorado and British Columbia, Canada.
"I am excited for our first full class as a coaching staff," said CMU coach Jim McElwain, who is preparing the Chippewas for their New Mexico Bowl game on Saturday (2 p.m.) against San Diego State in Albuquerque. "It's been fantastic to see this group come together and buy in to what is being built here. They have seen the direction and growth and made the choice to be part of a special university.
"Central Michigan is a program and a university that's on the rise. We've got tremendous leadership on campus with President (Robert) Davies and (Director of Athletics) Michael Alford who are doing unbelievable things for our university and our students.
"I look at this group as a lot of guys who understand what it means to be a Chippewa."

High School: Named to All-Interscholastic League of Honolulu First Team … helped lead St. Louis to 12-0 season and Open Division state championship.
Coach McElwain: "Lawai'a comes from a championship program, one of the best in the country. He's great in space and does a great job tackling in the open field. He has a great knack for forcing takeaways. He plays fearlessly and is explosive on contact. We're excited to be able to go into a program of that caliber and find a great young man such as him."

Coach McElwain: "Mitchel came and earned his offer at camp, which is always great to see when a kid comes here and bets on himself and shows what he can do. He committed soon after camp and has been a great advocate for the program and one of the guys who bought in early. He's a tough player, always looking to find work at the next level when he's blocking, and he's shown the ability to go out and make some plays in the passing game as well."

Coach McElwain: "Ke'Andre's speed jumps off the tape when you watch him play. He's a tremendous sprinter in track. In the spring he was running in the 10.7s in the 100-meter dash. As you look for guys who can help your offense be explosive, he's somebody that can change the game on every snap."

He was actually playing receiver up through his sophomore year and he kept growing. He's maintained that athleticism as he's continued to grow. He is a tough player with a great motor."

We hope he will continue the tight end tradition we've had here at Central Michigan."

Coach McElwain: "He's a kid that we identified early and had at the top of the board throughout the whole process. He's a very instinctive kid. His family has a lot of ties to the university. He had a grandfather (Eric Pape) who played here and he has several family members who have attended or are currently attending. He's got true Chippewa bloodlines. He also displays great leadership traits."

Coach McElwain: "Marcus' motor never stops when he's on the field. He seems like he's always around the ball making a play. He wrestled at 285 pounds and dropped about 40 pounds to move outside and play defensive end before his senior season started. He is really good with his hands and is a smart football player."

Coach McElwain: "Zahir was our first commit of this class. We've had good success going to New Jersey and finding some good Chippewas and we expect nothing less from Zahir. You can line him up in a lot a lot of different spots offensively and in the return game. He's really dynamic with the ball in his hands. He elusive, he's tough to wrap up, and has a great knack for making people miss."

High School: Recorded 34 tackles, including 24 solos, 4.0 sacks and one fumble recovery in senior season.
Coach McElwain: "Jason is a really strong player on the interior defensive line. He has good burst off the ball, strong hands when he strikes, very smart and able to identify things quickly on the field. He plays with great energy and passion. He is a really positive kid and he'll be a great locker room guy."
