Chippewas Drop Finale On Opening Weekend

CMU returns to the diamond next weekend in Arizona
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. –The Central Michigan softball team outhit College of Charleston on Sunday, but could not capitalize as it fell, 3-1, in its fifth and final game of the season-opening College of Charleston Cougar Classic.
The Chippewas (1-4) return to the diamond next weekend at the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz. They are scheduled to play five games in the event, opening on Friday, Feb. 15 against Utah State.
CMU outhit the Cougars, 7-6, on Sunday. Shannon Stein and Rachel Vieira each doubled for CMU, which trailed 3-0 and then scored a run in the top of the seventh inning on a Kaila Fulker sacrifice fly. The Chippewas stranded a runner at second base to end the game.
College of Charleston (4-1) scored two runs in the third inning and added an insurance run in the fourth.
Sophomore Cloe Mallory (0-2) took the loss. She allowed three runs on six hits and struck out four over 3 1/3 innings. Freshman Kaitlyn Bean struck out two over the final 2 2/3 frames.
Winning pitcher Drayton Siegling allowed five hits over six innings. Chandler Sparkman worked the seventh for her first save.
