Chippewas look to biggest indoor meet of the season next week
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan track & field team will travel to Saginaw on Friday to compete in the Saginaw Valley State University Tune-Up meet. Â
It is the Chippewas' final competition before the Mid-American Conference Championships, scheduled for Feb. 22-23 at Kent State. CMU is scheduled to begin the outdoor season at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic March 22-23 in Nashville, Tenn.
WHERE THEY STANDÂ
The CMU women's team is ranked seventh in the Great Lakes Region, and 49th in the nation. Both are the highest ranking among MAC teams.Â
Three Chippewa women are ranked in the top 50 nationally. Nadia Williams is fourth in the long jump with a season-best and program record 21 feet, ½ inch; Jenelle Perry is 27th in the long jump and 45th in the 60-meter hurdles, and Erin Howard is 26th in the shot put.
The Central Michigan men's team is ranked No. 14 in the Great Lakes Region. Three Chippewa men are ranked in the top 65 nationally: Logan Targgart is 36th in the weight throw, Kevin Weiler is 52nd in the shot put, and Shane Moffo is 65th in the 60-meter hurdles.
The men's 4x400 team, comprising Benjamin Hayes, Gavin Jaime, Jack Dodge and Roshawn Morton, ranks No. 2 in the MAC with a season-best time of 3:15.01.
LAST CHANCEÂ
With the MAC Championships around the corner, the SVSU Tune-Up serves two purposes: A chance to get ready for the MAC Championships, and a chance to improve on times, distances and heights. Several Chippewas will sit out the Tune-Up in order to rest and prepare for the MAC.
"We're trying to make sure we're firing on all cylinders," CMU director of track & field/cross country Jenny Swieton said. "There's not a lot of pressure on this meet;  we don't have any big performance goals as a whole. I think it's a really good opportunity for some of the student-athletes who aren't quite there yet for the MACs to get a really good performance in to close out their indoor season. That's a big priority."
