Chippewa Softball Goes 1-1 On Day 2 In Arizona

Freshman Shannon Stein's three-run homer highlights win over San Diego
The Chippewas defeated San Diego, 10-8, in their first game of the day, then dropped an 8-2 decision to the host Sun Devils, who are ranked 14th.
CMU (4-5) is scheduled to close the Classic on Sunday (11 a.m.) against fourth-ranked Florida.
GAME 1
Freshman Shannon Stein had three hits and drove in five runs to lead CMU past San Diego (2-6).
Stein smacked a three-run homer to highlight a six-run second inning, and she later added a two-run single.
The Chippewas led, 10-4, in the bottom of the seventh inning then surrendered a grand slam which cut their lead to 10-8.
Cloe Mallory, pitching in relief of starter Samantha Howell, induced a game-ending popup. Howell went 6 1/3 innings for the victory. She struck out three, walked two and allowed eight hits.
Allison Curtis had five hits including a double and Tala Dean had three hits including a home run for the Chippewas, who collected a season-high 16 hits.
Stein, a freshman from Albuquerque, N.M., homered for the third consecutive game.
GAME 2
Arizona State (6-2) broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the second inning, then added two more in the third and two in the fourth to pull away.
Curtis and Dean each singled and doubled to lead CMU at the plate. Both Chippewa runs came in the first inning, the first on a Rachel Vieira single, and the second on a Dean double.
Freshman Haley John started and took the loss. Kaitlyn Bean and Mallory each pitched in relief.
