Chippewas use big inning in downing Troy
TROY, Ala. – Zach Kohn's six shutout innings and a four-run third inning propelled Central Michigan to a 5-2 victory over Troy on Sunday in the finale of the Chippewas' season-opening four-game series at Riddle-Pace Field.
The Chippewas, 2-2, won the final two games of the series to earn a split.
"(Sunday) was a blueprint for how we want to play," first-year CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "It was great for our guys to see that if we play our style of baseball we will have success."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas scored four times in the third inning, getting RBI singles from Zavier Warren, Jason Sullivan and Zach Gilles. Jacob Crum stole home, executing the back end of a double steal with Gaoshua Willams.
Williams homered to left field in the fourth inning to extend CMU's lead to 5-0.
AT THE PLATE
Crum doubled twice and Williams finished with two hits to lead the Chippewas' seven-hit attack.
ON THE MOUND
Kohn surrendered three hits,struck out four and walked two over six innings. For the win
"Zach has really prepared hard in the preseason, and it paid off today," Bischel said. "He attacked the strike zone like crazy."
Cameron Miller went the final three innings for the save. He allowed just one hit while striking out three.
Troy starter Sadler Goodwin took the loss.

CMU travels to Beaumont, Texas for the Lamar Cardinal Classic next week. The Chippewas begin the tournament against Lamar on Friday (3 p.m.). CMU will play two games each against Lamar and Prairie View A&M.
