Chippewas slated to play 13 games in 10 days
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Like hundreds of thousands of college students, those on the Central Michigan softball team are headed to Florida for Spring Break.
Unlike most of their fellow college students, the Chippewas aren't there for some R&R.
CMU is scheduled to play 13 games in 10 days in the Sunshine State, beginning with the Madeira Beach Tournament where they will open on Friday against St. Johns (1:30 p.m.) and close the day against Siena (6:30 p.m.).
Over the 10 days, CMU is scheduled to play Boston College, Presbyterian, Penn State (twice), South Dakota State, Penn, South Florida, Army, Providence, Wisconsin and Holy Cross. The Chippewas will play in Clearwater and Tampa in addition to Madeira Beach.
LAST TIME OUT
The Chippewas (4-6) finished 3-2 at the Arizona State Littlewood Classic two weeks ago. Their losses came to No. 4 Florida and No. 14 Arizona State.
Sophomore Tala Dean and senior Allison Curtis led the Chippewas in the plate on their trip to the desert.
Dean hit .700 with three home runs and seven RBI in Arizona, earning the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week Award. Curtis hit .647 (11 for 17) with four extra-base hits.
LEADERS
Curtis ranks second in the MAC in hitting (.452), while teammate Shannon Stein is ninth in the league with nine RBI and ranks sixth in slugging percentage (.714).
All five pitchers – Samantha Howell, Kaitlyn Bean, Haley John, Cloe Mallory and Shannon Stein -- on the Chippewa roster have started at least one game this season. Mallory has made a team-high seven appearances, six of them in relief.
