CMU returns to tournament play Feb. 22-24 in Arizona
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Central Michigan golf team dropped both of its matches on Tuesday during the final day of the Mid-American Conference Match Play Challenge at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club.
The Chippewas, who were seeded ninth, went 1-3 in the 12-team, two-day event to finish in eighth place. CMU fell, 3-2, to seventh-seeded Western Michigan on Tuesday morning and then closed with a 4-0-1 loss to fifth-seeded Illinois State.
Against Western Michigan, CMU senior Bria Colosky posted a 4-and-3 victory over Brooke Gibbons, and teammate Jami Laude, a sophomore, topped Claire Hernandez, 5-and-4. CMU junior Danielle Sawyer earned a halve in her match with Illinois State's Caitlin Sims.
Western Michigan's Cameryn Lucia defeated Holly Hines, 6-and-4; Fiona Wang topped Sawyer, 3-and-2; and Jasmine Chee defeated Meghan Deardorff, 4-and-2.
"We didn't play that bad against Western," CMU coach Jim Earle said. "The middle of their lineup was outstanding today. I think all three of them were under par. I don't think anybody was going to beat them today."
Against Illinois State, Colosky fell, 5-and-4, to Morgan Savage; Hines dropped a 2-and-1 decision to Becca Black; Deardorff fell, 2-and-1, to Paige Seiser; and Laude made a valiant comeback before succumbing, 4-and-3, to Emma Sutton.
"Jami was dormie, she was seven down with seven holes to go and won four straight holes," Earle said. "We didn't give up. We fought hard. Ultimately, I think our putting really let us down today. It's tough to win a hole without making a birdie.
"It was a great course, a great tournament. We learned a lot. We had some disappointments down the stretch and hopefully that's going to make us stronger."
The Chippewas return to action Feb. 22-24 in Rio Verde, Ariz. at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational. The 54-hole stroke-play event is hosted by Western Michigan.
Host Bowling Green, the No. 3 seed, defeated top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast in a playoff to win the tournament.
