Chippewas 6th in 10-team field, 1 shot ahead of seventh-place Western Michigan
AKRON, Ohio – Zoe Dull shot her second consecutive 2-over par 72 on Monday to lead the Central Michigan women's golf team during the second round of the Mid-American Conference Championships at Firestone Country Club.
Dull moved up three spots on the leaderboard and is tied for 11th place in the 50-player field headed into Tuesday's final round, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Dull led the Chippewas to a 302 team score on Monday. CMU is in sixth place, one shot ahead of seventh-place Western Michigan in the 10-team field.
Dull made 16 pars against two bogeys on Monday. The freshman from Spring Lake has made a tournament-best 28 pars through 36 holes on the par-70, 6,105-yard layout.
"To make 16 pars is pretty impressive," CMU coach Ryan Williams said. "She's keeping it very simple and executing well and that's kind of what it takes. She had some birdie looks out there that she would have liked to have made, but she also had some really good par saves. She's doing her thing; it's really good to see and it's helping us a lot."
CMU's Lexi Schulman and Ella Zanatta both shot 6-over 76 on Monday, while Rachel Niskanen and Brooke Morris both posted an 8-over 78.
Schulman is tied for 27th with a 10-over 150 total; Zanatta is alone in 32nd place at 11-over, Niskanen (14 over) is tied for 36th, and Morris (18 over) is tied for 45th.
The majority of the scores, both individually and team wise, increased from Sunday's opening round. That was due to the wind picking up and course drying, making it play somewhat more difficult.
"I think we started out playing a golf course that was soft and a little bit slow where you could be very aggressive and it turned a little crispy and a little spicy (on Monday)," Williams said. "We started to struggle a little bit down the stretch and we've talked about that, and we've talked about making adjustments and being ready for that.
"We hung in there pretty tough and were able to move up on the leaderboard a spot, which is really nice and I don't think that we necessarily had our best stuff. That's good to see and hopefully we put it all together tomorrow and have a really good day.
"Pretty happy with where we stand. You always want more, especially when you're in the middle of the pack and you see some teams ahead of you that you can go jump and hope you can make some moves. The final round of a conference championship is always interesting. A lot can happen in either direction and hopefully we get things going in the right direction early tomorrow and build off of that."
Kent State's Veronika Kedronova shot a 1-under 69 on Monday and stands at 4-under for the tournament. She holds a two-shot lead over Eastern Michigan's Savanna de Bock, who shot 70 on Monday.
The Golden Flashes posted their second straight 278 team total and are 11 shots ahead of second-place Bowling Green. Eastern Michigan is third, 15 shots back of Kent State.
