Chippewas (297) in 7th place in 10-team field; round 2 begins at 9 a.m. on Monday
AKRON, Ohio – Zoe Dull shot a 2-over par 72 on Sunday to lead the Central Michigan women's golf team during the first round of the Mid-American Conference Championships at Firestone Country Club.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole event is scheduled for Monday with a 9 a.m. tee time.
Dull, a freshman, is tied for 14th in the 50-player field. Her 72 equaled her best aggregate score of the season. She also posted rounds of 72 at the Rio Verde Collegiate and at the BGSU Women's Intercollegiate.
"She just played steady golf," CMU coach Ryan Williams said. "She chipped and putted it really well today, which makes a huge difference. The course is pretty long, it's a pretty tough setup, and when you're playing a longer course you're not going to hit as many greens in regulation and you want to bring a good short game with you; you've got to rely on it, a lot, and she did that today."
Dull made two birdies against four bogeys in her round and recorded 12 pars, tying for the third most in the field. It was a solid performance, particularly for a freshman playing in her first MAC Championships.
"She takes things in stride and doesn't get too, too worked up," Williams said. "She's pretty even-keeled. For her it was just another day out there, which is good. It's a conference championship and you're playing for a little bit more so I thought she handled it really well."
Dull led the Chippewas to a 297 team score. They stand in seventh place in the 10-team field, four shots behind sixth-place Akron.
Also for CMU on Sunday, Lexi Schulman shot a 4-over 74, Ella Zanatta posted a 5-over 75, Rachel Niskanen carded a 6-over 76, and Brooke Morris shot a 10-over 80.
Schulman is tied for 21st, Zanatta is tied for 26th, Niskanen is tied for 32nd, and Morris is tied for 45th.
"We played steady, smart golf and I was definitely happy with it," Williams said. "I know we left some shots out there for sure. Talking with the team after the round, they're motivated by the opportunity to play even better tomorrow. We're pretty happy with the result from today but we want to move up the leaderboard, and we want to take advantage of some of those chances we'll get over the next couple of days.
"After a day like today, you kind of realize that there are going to be more opportunities than you think, and it's not just going to necessarily be a grind. There's going to be opportunities, and you want to be ready for them and take advantage and capitalize when you get those chances and you can kind of go hunting for them a little bit too and be a bit more aggressive."
Sammie Dolce of Bowling Green and Kent State's Veronika Kedronova both shot a 3-under 67 on Sunday to share the first-round lead by one shot over Savannah de Bock of Eastern Michigan and Kent State's Leon Takagi.
Kent State, which has won every MAC women's team title since the tournament's inception in 1999, posted a 278 team score and leads second-place Eastern Michigan by three shots. Kent State is ranked 28th nationally, while EMU is ranked 19th.
