Technical fall in final bout the difference
BUFFALO, N.Y. – A technical fall in the final match of the night proved to be the difference on Friday as the Central Michigan wrestling dropped a Mid-American Conference dual to Buffalo, 18-17, at the Bulls' Alumni Arena.
The loss dropped CMU to 3-7, 2-4 MAC. Buffalo is 10-4, 3-2. The Chippewas go to Kent State on Sunday (1 p.m.) for their final MAC dual of the season.
The teams split the 10 matches, with CMU getting two major-decision victories while the Bulls notched one major plus the technical fall to eke out the victory, their first ever over the Chippewas in 24 duals.
The Chippewas' Matt Stencel (285 pounds) and Jordan Atienza (184) both won by major decision, and CMU got decision victories from Drew Hildebrandt (125), Dresden Simon (149) and Logan Parks (157).
The meet start at 174 pounds and came down to the finale at 165, where Buffalo senior Troy Keller posted three near-falls, two of them of the four-point variety, in building a 12-2 first-period lead over sophomore Blake Montrie.
The match went the entire seven minutes, and Keller's riding-time point gave him the 15-point margin of victory for the tech fall and the five team points necessary to give Buffalo the victory.
• Stencel, who is ranked first in the MAC and eighth nationally by The Open Mat, defeated Jake Gunning, 8-0, running his win streak to 12 and lifting his record to 21-4. Gunning, who is 11-3 in duals this season and had won his last five matches, is ranked third in the MAC and 17thnationally.
• Hildebrandt, a sophomore who is ranked 19thnationally and third in the MAC, returned to the lineup after missing CMU's last two duals and posted a 6-0 victory over senior Kyle Akins.
