Lemay posts fourth-consecutive hat trick to lead CMU
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Casey Harkins scored with just under six minutes remaining on Monday as American edged Central Michigan, 11-10, in a nonconference lacrosse game at the CMU Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.
It was the third straight loss for CMU (2-4). American is 4-3.
The Chippewas will travel to Pittsburgh on Friday, March 15 (3 p.m.) for a nonconference game with Duquesne.
"It hurts to lose three in a row," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "I think we need to quickly turn this around and (get back to business) at Duquesne."
HOW IT HAPPENED
CMU's Jocelyne Lemay scored with 10 minutes remaining to tie the game, 10-10, after a back-and-forth first 50 minutes that saw the Chippewas twice seize three-goal leads in the first half, and then twice fall into a two-goal deficits in the final 30 minutes.
Harkins' goal, which proved to be the game-winner, came with 1 second remaining on the shot clock.
American finished with 28 shots, 22 of which were on goal; Central Michigan had 25 shots with 20 on goal.
"I think we need to be a little bit better (finishing)," Tisdale said. "We had some quality looks."
The Chippewas' have dropped three straight games since a 12-11 overtime win over Cincinnati in their home opener more than a week ago. All three of those losses have been very competitive.
"Unlike the Cincinnati game, we didn't do a very good job of managing our last possession," Tisdale said. "That wasn't the look we wanted to go after. I think (what we need to learn from this) is making sure we have the right people at the right spots and we get the looks that we want."
LEADERS
Lemay scored a season-high four goals to lead CMU, while Shannon Doyle had three goals, Jessica Schuchardt added two goals and two assists, and Tyra Prince finished with three assists.
It marked the fourth-consecutive game that Lemay has scored at least three goals. She has 13 goals over that span. It was Doyle's first hat trick of the season.
Dominique Hamman started in goal and Hope Murray relieved and played the entire second half for CMU. Hamman surrendered seven goals and made four saves; Murray allowed four goals and made seven saves in taking the loss.
