Schoonover, Karlen combine for 12 goals
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Have a day Anna Schoonover and Natalie Karlen.
Â
The two attackers combined for 12 of Central Michigan's 16 goals on Thursday as the Chippewas defeated Marquette, 16-7, in a nonconference game at the CMU Lacrosse/Soccer Complex. The win ended CMU's losing streak at four games as it improved to 3-5 with its first victory over the Golden Eagles in four meetings.
Â
Schoonover, a senior from Eagan, Minn., scored seven goals, breaking the program record of six she held with Shannon Doyle and Jocelyne Lemay. Karlen had five goals and two assists.
Â
"It's a pretty cool feeling," Schoonover said of breaking the record. "Honestly, I didn't keep track of how many goals I had. Playing as a unit is something we've been wanting to do, and I think today we really stepped up and found the looks we were looking for, finding the back of the net. The seven goals was something that happened with it."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Karlen and Schoonover scored three first-half goals apiece as the Chippewas jumped to an 8-2 lead at the break. Marquette never got closer than five goals in the second half.
Â
Schoonover would continue her dominant day, adding four more goals in the second half.
Â
Marquette had 38 shots, 24 on goal. CMU had 29 shots, 26 on goal.
Â
"We are probably the most opposite of any team in the country with the fact that our practices have been outstanding and our games have been inconsistent," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "What you saw today was exactly what we see from Karlen and Schoonover in practice every single day. They make our defense so much better. That's why you saw Brianna Hart and Angela Palmer be able to do what they did today on the defensive end."
Â
LEADERS
Emma Hamilton added two goals, and Lemay and Julie Lindsey had one each. It was the first career goal for Lindsey, a freshman. Schoonover finished with nine shots, all of them on goal. The nine shots ties for the third-most in a single game in program history, and the nine on goal is second in program history.
Â
Hope Murray drew her first start in goal for the Chippewas. She played all 60 minutes and made 17 saves.
Â
DEADLY DUO
Schoonover and Karlen complemented each other. Karlen finished with seven points, tying for third in program history in a single game.
Â
"When your team is doing well, that's when I do well," Karlen said. "Seeing (Anna) score all those goals makes me want to score too. I like to work with Anna a lot, she's one of my favorite players on the field to be with. I think today we really stepped up as a unit and we were struggling with that a bit. Today I think we really left it all on the field and played our hearts out."
Â
Said Schoonover: "I think we know our drivers and our feeders. If there's a drive, we need to look for the feed, and if there's a feed, we need to look for the next look of the drive. I think we do a very good job of finding that opposite look, and see who's having a good game, get the ball to them, and clearing lanes."
Â
NEXT
