1 Win, 1 Loss For Chippewa Softball

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Central Michigan Softball team split its two games on Friday as it began its final weekend of Spring Break.

The Chippewas defeated Army West Point, 2-1, and then fell to Providence, 5-0.

CMU (8-12) is scheduled to face Penn State and Wisconsin on Saturday. The Chippewas take on the Nittany Lions at 9:30 a.m., and are slated to play Wisconsin at noon. CMU is slated to close its Spring Break trip on Sunday (9 a.m.) against Holy Cross.

Shaindan Knapp's sixth-inning solo home run broke a 1-1 tie and gave CMU the victory over Army West Point (5-11).

Knapp had three hits to lead CMU and Erika Underwood drove in CMU's first run with a first-inning sacrifice fly.

Cloe Mallory (2-2) earned the victory in relief of starter Kaitlyn Bean. Mallory went three hitless innings, striking out one and walking two. Bean allowed one run on four hits, struck out four and walked one over four innings.

The Chippewas managed just one hit, a two-out triple in the third inning by Knapp, in their loss to Providence (6-6).

The Friars' Hadley Tate hit a fourth-inning grand slam to turn a 1-0 lead into 5-0.

Samantha Howell (1-1) started and took the loss, her first of the season. She allowed four runs on three hits. Mallory went the final three frames, allowing one run on two hits.
