Chippewa Softball Drops 2 To Big Ten Foes

CMU closes Spring Break trip on Sunday against Holy Cross
CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Central Michigan softball team dropped a pair of games to Big Ten opponents on Saturday during its Spring Break trip.
The Chippewas lost to Penn State, 3-1, and then dropped a 2-0 decision to Wisconsin. CMU (8-14) is scheduled to play the final game of its trip on Sunday (10 a.m.) against Holy Cross.
Penn State took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning against the Chippewas on a Toni Polk RBI single. The Nittany Lions made it 3-0 on a Destiny Weber pinch-hit two-run homer.
CMU got its run in the seventh on Erika Underwood's second home run of the season.
Freshman Kaitlyn Bean (2-3) started for CMU and took the loss. She allowed nine hits, walked one, and struck out four. Cloe Mallory went the final 1 1/3 innings in relief. She struck out two.
Penn State's Hannah Shields (1-2) allowed just two hits. Shaidan Knapp accounted for the Chippewas' first hit, and infield single leading off the fourth inning. The Nittany Lions are 11-12.
The Chippewas outhit Wisconsin, 7-5, but could not break through. All seven of CMU's hits were singles. Allison Curtis had two hits to lead the Chippewas.
Haley John (3-6) went the distance in the circle for the Chippewas. She struck out two and walked three. Wisconsin's Kaitlyn Menz (6-1) struck out three and did not issue a walk. The Badgers are 19-3.
