Honor recognizes athletic, academic excellence
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Four Central Michigan football players were named to the 2019 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society.
Â
CMU's Luke Idoni, Devon Spalding, Mitch Stanitzek and Clayton Walderzak, each of whom was a senior in the 2018 season, were named the society, which comprises players who maintained a 3.20 or better grade point average throughout their college careers.
Â
Idoni, who hails from Fenton, is a biomedical sciences major with a 3.71 GPA; Spalding, from Canton, is a criminal justice major with a 3.40 GPA; Stanitzek, from Grand Rapids, is a marketing/logistics management major with a 3.74 GPA; and Walderzak, from Standish, is a construction management major with a 3.25 GPA.
Â
All four student-athletes were named Academic All-Mid-American Conference following the 2018 season. Idoni and Stanitzek were both three-time Academic All-MAC honorees, while Walderzak was so honored twice in his career.
Â
The selection of the quartet of Chippewas brings to 29 the number of CMU football players who have been named to the Hampshire Honor Society in its 13-year history.
Â
At the Chippewas' annual season-ending banquet in December, Walderzak received the team's Derrick Nash Unsung Hero Award; Spalding, its Dustin Preston Leadership Award; and Stanitzek, the Kurt Donbronski Award.
Â
A record 1,661 players from across the country in all divisions of college football were named to the society.
Â
"For more than a decade, the society has become a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives," National Football Foundation President Steve Hatchell said.
