Brutal weather greets Chippewas, MAC brethren in league tournament
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – Jami Laude shot a 6-over-par 78 on Friday to lead the Central Michigan golf team during the first round of the Mid-American Conference Championships at Purgatory Golf Club.
Laude is among a group of eight players tied for ninth place after an extremely challenging day featuring low temperatures, strong winds and rain.
Not one of the 50 players in the field broke par. First-round leader Saranlak Tumfong of Toledo posted a 2-over 74. Four players were at 75. The second round is scheduled for Saturday with a 9 a.m. tee time with the final round in the 54-hole event set for Sunday.
The Chippewas shot a 329 team total and stand in ninth place in the 10-team event, four shots ahead of Western Michigan and one shot behind Bowling Green. The Chippewas are five shots back of Eastern Michigan and Ball State, who are tied for sixth at 324.
Toledo shot 303 for a two-shot lead over Kent State, which is ranked 10th nationally. Northern Illinois is in third place at 310.
Also for the Chippewas on Friday, Danielle Sawyer shot 81, Meghan Deardorff posted an 84, Rachel Leucuta carded an 86, and Bria Colosky shot 87. Sawyer is among a group tied for 23rd.
