Laude ties for 30th with three sub-80 rounds
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – The weather improved, and so did the Central Michigan golf team.
The rest of the field followed suit.
As bad as it was for two days at the Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships, it was that good for the third and final day on Sunday when Mother Nature served up sunny skies and temperatures around 70 at Purgatory Golf Club.
Ideal for golf and, with a course saturated by two-plus days of rain, ideal for scoring.
The Chippewas shot 317 in the first round on Sunday and then posted a 319 in the second round to finish in 10th place with a 54-hole 965 total.
Every team in the field improved, some dramatically, from Friday's opening round. Saturday's second round was postponed, making Sunday a 36-hole day that felt more like a walk in the park compared to Friday's round in near-freezing temperatures, strong winds and a steady rain.
Certainly, CMU showed improvement. And first-year coach Jim Earle knows the Chippewas are capable of being competitive in the MAC.
"We have players on the team that have some talent there's no doubt about that," Earle said. "I think we're going to get a big jolt with the players we signed for next year and we'll see what a competitive team as a whole produces in fall of 2019."
Kent State, which is ranked 10th nationally, won its 21st consecutive MAC title, finishing with an 857 total. The Golden Flashes posted a 305 in Friday's opening round, and trailed upset-minded Toledo by two shots entering play on Sunday morning.
The Golden Flashes shot a 278 team total in Sunday's first round, and then posted a 274 in the second. They finished at 7-under par, 18 shots better than Toledo, which finished at 875.
Kent State junior Karoline Stormo posted a 5-under 216 to claim a two-shot victory over Toledo's Saraniak Tumfong. Kent State's Chloe Salort, who finished at 1-under, finished third and teammate Thitapa Pakdeesettk was fourth at 1-over.
CMU sophomore Jami Laude finished tied for 30th with a 235 total. She posted rounds of 78-79-78.
"I think she's ready to take the next step in her game and start to compete for tournament titles," Earle said. She's that talented."
CMU's Meghan Deardorff and Danielle Sawyer both shot 79 on Sunday, while Rachel Leucuta posted an 83, and Bria Colosky carded an 84.
Deardorff finished at 240, Sawyer at 243, Colosky at 250 and Leucuta at 251.
