Chippewas claim 17 firsts at Western Michigan
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Marissa Dunn set the program record in the women's hammer throw and Central Michigan posted 17 first-place finishes on Friday at the Jack Shaw Track & Field Classic at Western Michigan's Kanley Track & Field Complex.
Â
"I think the team did really awesome," CMU director of track & field Jenny Swieton said. "Our athletes have been training pretty hard. Sometimes you see the marks and see the times, but other times you don't see those quite yet (at this point in the season).
Â
"I think some people performed really well considering where they're at for training, and we had a good time."
Â
RECORD TOSS
Dunn's throw of 198 feet, 8 inches in the women's hammer was an astounding 34 feet farther than the next-best toss in the meet, and it shattered the previous CMU program mark (194-2 ÂĽ) set in 2017 by Kylee Dobbelaere.
Â
"Coach Stephen Saenz has been saying the record was there," Swieton said. "He knew that (Dunn) could do it; it was only a matter of time. I don't think the coaching staff was entirely surprised; they're obviously very happy about it."
Â
Not only did Dunn, a sophomore from Novi, set the Chippewa standard, she likely secured a spot at the first round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, a major accomplishment for this early in the season.
Â
"That's always a good position to be in early because you won't be chasing marks," Swieton said.
