McLean earns silver in shot put, pushes up to fourth on all-time list; Thompson moves to fourth all-time in 3000m steeplechase
MUNCIE, Ind. — Central Michigan Track & Field continued the Mid-American Conference Track & Field Championships Friday afternoon. 11 individuals competed on the second day of competition, which concludes Saturday.
Senior Emily McLean highlighted the day by earning silver in the shot put with a personal best throw of 15.07m. The mark, reached on her final attempt, pushed her up the all-time list to fourth in Chippewa history.
Eva Thompson earned the Chippewas' second top 10 of the day in the 3000m steeplechase. Thompson logged 10:26.91 in the event for fourth in both the meet and on the Chippewas' all-time list.
"It was not the day we hoped for, but there were some really big highlights. I cannot express the significance of watching a senior throw a PR on her last throw to move into second place to start the day and a freshman having a breakout performance to finish the day," Central Michigan Director of Track & Field Jenny Swieton said, "We fought hard today, and we're ready to fight again tomorrow."
Ereka Risner and Victoria Merrick joined McLean in the shot put. Risner reached 13.41m on her third attempt for 13th overall, while Merrick logged 11.86m on her first attempt.
Linnearia Richards closed out field events, and started running events for the Chippewas with the long jump and 100m hurdles. Richards took tenth in the long jump, posting 5.73m on her second attempt. In the 100m hurdles, she took 15th overall with a 14.46-second performance.
Danica Shamion, Ella Sweatt, and Robyn Watts represented the Chippewas in the 400m. Shamion led the way with a 56.46-second showing for 14th, while Sweatt and Watts posted 57.57 seconds and 54.64 seconds, respectively.
Sophia Garland closed out festivities for the sprint team in the 100m dash. Garland logged 12.10 seconds in the event to finish 21st overall.
In the 800m, Maya Guikema, Jessie Gibbins, and Lois Creasey represented CMU. Guikema led the way at 2:10.62 for an 11th-place finish. Gibbins posted 2:13.07 for 17th, and Creasey rounded it out at 2:16.13.
The Chippewas ended the day in the 3000m steeplechase with Thompson's top 10 time alongside Emma Janesak, Emma Netzel, and Nikki Carothers. Janesak took 16th overall with an 11:06.93 finish; Netzel and Carothers went 20th and 21st with 11:30.76 and 11:48.35, respectively.
