Underwood repeats as all-conference first teamer
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Four Central Michigan student-athletes have been named to the All-Mid-American Conference softball team.
Two Chippewas, Erika Underwood and Rachel Vieira, were named to the All-MAC First Team, while Sara Hansen earned a spot on the second team, and Kaitlyn Bean was named to the all-freshman squad.
Underwood, Vieira and Hansen are all seniors, and it is the second team that each has earned All-MAC honors in their respective careers.
Underwood, a first baseman from Addison, leads the Chippewas in batting average (.356), RBI (31), hits (48) and slugging percentage (.622), and ranks second with eight home runs. She also shares the team lead with 10 doubles. It marks the second-consecutive year that she has earned a spot on the All-MAC First Team.
Hansen, who has played primarily in left field but filled in admirably in center when Allison Curtis missed extended time due to an injury, is hitting .282 with five doubles, one home run and 13 RBI. She leads the Chippewas with seven stolen bases (in nine attempts). Hansen, who hails from Mount Pleasant, was named the 2015 MAC Freshman of the Year and also to the All-MAC Second Team and the MAC All-Freshman Team that season.
Vieira, a second baseman from Clarkston, is hitting .275 and shares the team lead in doubles (10) with Underwood. She is second on the team with 36 hits, has driven in 12 runs and has struck out just 12 times in 131 at-bats on the season. Vieira earned a nod to the All-MAC Second Team in 2017.
Bean, who hails from Oxford, has emerged as a consistent starter in the circle, posting an 8-6 record with a 4.89 earned run average.
The Chippewas open play in the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Wednesday (10:30 a.m.) against Northern Illinois at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
