FARMVILLE, Va. – The Central Michigan field hockey team fell to Longwood, 1-0, on Friday in its first Mid-American Conference game of the season.
The Chippewas play a nonconference game on Sunday (noon) at Saint Francis in Loretto, Pa. Saint Francis defeated Davidson, 3-2, in overtime on Friday in their Atlantic 10 Conference opener.
How It Happened
The CMU defense was busy in the first half, as the Chippewas were outshot 22-1. Despite possession being largely dominated by Longwood, CMU was able to hold the Lancers scoreless well into the first half.
Longwood broke through with just under two minutes left in the second quarter, as Sophia Loscher managed to infiltrate the Chippewas defense for the game's lone goal.
CMU managed to hold the Lancers scoreless for the entirety of the second half behind impressive play from goalkeeper Abigail Ebersole, but couldn't tie the game with a goal of its own.
"We were up there," CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said. "The first half we struggled, but for the second half we were up attacking, we just didn't bury anything."
Longwood finished with a 32-2 advantage in shots.
Getting the Offense Going
The Chippewas have failed to score a goal in their last four games.
"It's tough, we're in the attacking 25, but we have to draw something," Ostoich said. "Right now there's a disconnect. We've got to work on figuring out ways of eliminating people and getting shots on goal, and earning corners and earning opportunities there."
Strong in Goal
After posting 16 saves in the Chippewas' last game against Michigan, CMU goalkeeper Abigail Ebersole had 15 against the Lancers.
"Abby played a phenomenal game," Ostoich said. "She's just been incredible these last few games. She is here and this is hopefully what we're going to see for the rest of the season."
Ebersole leads the MAC in saves per game with 7.86.
