Chippewas coming off first tournament title
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Last time out, it was an historic outcome for the Central Michigan golf team.
Now, it's back at it.
The Chippewas will tee it up on Monday at the Eastern Michigan Shirley Spork Invitational at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti. The 12-team field includes three of the Chippewas' Mid-American Conference brethren, host Eastern Michigan along with Ohio and Western Michigan.
CMU won the season-opening Golden Grizzlies Invitational two weeks ago, overcoming late struggles and hanging on to the lead and eventually winning. It was the first tournament championship in program history.
"The lesson that we learned in the win is that every shot counts, especially down the stretch," CMU coach Jim Earle said. "Hopefully we've learned that lesson well and we're able to take that to the next event. Our confidence is pretty high that's for sure and we're excited about teeing it up again.
"I don't think we've played our best golf yet, that's for sure."
The Spork is the Chippewas' second of five fall tournaments. They are scheduled to partake in the MAC Fall Preview Oct. 7-8.
Joining the Chippewas and their three fellow MAC members in the field are Cleveland State, Chicago State, Dayton, Detroit Mercy, Green Bay, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, and Purdue Fort Wayne. Michigan will enter three golfers as individuals.
The 54-hole, stroke-play tournament begins at 9 a.m. Monday. The players are scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday with the final 18 holes slated for Tuesday.
