Chippewas, 2-2, return home for Tuesday morning game
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The CMU field hockey team dropped a 5-3 nonconference decision to Columbia at Iowa's Grant Field on Saturday.
The loss left the Chippewas 2-2. It was the Lions' season opener.
How It Happened
Columbia scored three goals in the second quarter to overcome an early 2-0 deficit. CMU never regained the lead, but managed to cut its deficit to 4-3 before the Lions scored an empty-net goal to ice it.
Samantha Glapinski and Georgina Minta scored in the first quarter for CMU.
"I think we got comfortable," CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said. "We scored two goals and I think we were like, 'OK, we're good,' and two goals is not enough to get comfortable."
Freshman Alice O'Hagan scored her fourth goal of the season with just over 10 minutes remaining, bringing CMU within one, 4-3, and pumping some life into the Chippewas.
"That goal really brought some life back to us," Ostoich said. "We talked after the third quarter and said it's going to be a fight, but we're not out of this game, we've got to keep pushing. I give the girls a lot of credit, they got up the field, we got a corner and we scored."
Coach's Take
Though her team went 0-2 on its weekend trip to Iowa, Ostoich said there were plenty of positives to draw upon, including the fact that CMU turned in an energized performance on Saturday against Columbia after falling, 11-0, to eighth-ranked Iowa on Friday.
"It's unfortunate because we had opportunities, we just didn't capitalize on them," she said. "I will give the team a lot of credit for coming back out (on Saturday). It's hard to get beaten badly the day before and then to come out and actually put up a good fight. … We're walking away proud.
"We're going to get some rest and rejuvenate ourselves. We've got a couple days before our next game so we're going to get our mindset and we're going to get back out there and show up."
