Chippewas to take on Akron in dual meet on Friday
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan track and field team heads to Akron, Ohio on Friday to compete in a dual meet with Mid-American Conference opponent Akron at the Zips' Stile Athletics Field House.
Â
Last season, the women's squads from the respective schools split the league championships: CMU won the MAC Indoor Championships, while Akron captured the outdoor title.
Â
The MAC Indoor Championships are scheduled for Akron on Feb. 28-29.
Â
Last Time Out
The Chippewas were scheduled to complete at the Wolverine Invitational at Michigan last weekend, but did not compete due to poor weather and travel considerations.
Â
Friday's meet at Akron will be the Chippewas' first competition since Dec. 6 at Grand Valley State.
Â
Individual Rankings
CMU senior Nadia Williams ranks first in the nation in the women's long jump. She recorded a leap of 21 feet, 1 ¼ inches – a program record – in CMU's indoor season-opening meet at Grand Valley.
Â
The Chippewas' Logan Targgart, a senior, is ranked eighth in the nation in the men's weight throw at 69-5 ¼.
Â
Contenders
Friday's meet will be a good test for both Chippewa squads, CMU Director of Track and Field Jenny Swieton said. The Akron men and women are among the perennially strong programs in the MAC.
Â
"We want to get back in the race mentality," Swieton said. "Since Akron is hosting the MAC Championship, it's good for us to go down there, check out the facility and get comfortable.
Â
"There's no better way to spark the competitive juices than compete in a little bit of a rivalry meet, especially on the women's side. It's nice to get back and get the competition flowing.
Â
"I hope that when we're leaving, we can say that our group as a whole was very competitive, gave everything they had, and they were confident doing so. I hope they swing for the fences in the best way they can at this moment, and hopefully we can keep that mentality moving forward as we get fitter."
Â
Next
CMU will send athletes to multiple meets next weekend. A group of athletes will travel to University Center to compete in the Saginaw Valley State Jet's Pizza Invitational.
Â
Another group of Chippewas will head to Ypsilanti to compete in the Can Am Classic at Eastern Michigan.
